A group of students and graduates from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City, currently touring outlining areas of the country, will be including the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve and its tremendous diversity in an ongoing scientific, cultural, and social documentary.
The project, format of which is similar to a “reality show”, includes a multidisciplinary group as they travel the country by bus while focusing on topics of biodiversity, ecosystems, local cuisine, culture, and different interactions between regions.
David Gerardo Polo Sanchez, coordinator of one of the documentary teams, stated within the Pinacate they were able to visit lava bubbles, the dunes, and the Schuk Toak Visitors Center, which provided plenty of information on shield volcanoes, the scenic route, as well as the region’s ecosystem.
The project has also included San Luis Rio Colorado, Caborca, Hermosillo, Guaymas, and Ciudad Obregón, where they have come across a patchwork of ecosystems such as the Colorado River Delta, la Ciénaga marsh, and the sands of the Colorado River.
“Sonora is a patchwork, it offers many things; everything has been impressive, there are many things within the same area,” detailed the researcher.
The documentary teams, made up of scholarship students that continuously rotate, will be traveling the country’s perimeter for 18 months. One team will travel from the southeastern part of the country to the northwest, and the other from north to southeast.
During their stay in Puerto Peñasco, the team received informational support from CONANP staff (National Commission on Natural Protected Areas), the local Convention and Visitors Bureau (OCV), as well as COFETUR (Sonoran Tourism Commission).
The informative shorts showcasing what the explorers encounter throughout their travels will be shown on Channel 11 and TV UNAM Sundays at 9 p.m.
