Time for the Triathlon!

The Rocky Point Triathlon welcomes runners and sports aficionados on Saturday April 30th, 2016. More than 1,000 competitors flock to Rocky Point every year for this exciting event. People from Arizona, California, Baja, and even Canada will join together in Rocky Point for what will be a fantastic weekend of sports, activities and parties! The Rocky Point triathlon is a great event that combines the sea and sand with cool breezes and a great after party. Rocky Points’ proximity to the US is certainly an added perk. According to Tim DaBoom of Triathlete Magazine, “If you want to stay close to the U.S., take a day trip from Phoenix down to Rocky Point, Mexico, for the Las Palomas Triathlon and the best post-race beach party around.”

Registration will be held Friday April 29th at Las Palomas Resort, also hosting the event. Here, participants will pick up their race packet and pertinent information. There will be an expo and participants can also have their bikes tuned up by Tribe Multisports.

Saturday morning it’s off to the race! There are various options offered for participants from experienced and competitive athletes, to those who like to run for leisure. The Olympic Course offers a 100 meter swim, 27.5 mile bike and 6.2 mile run. The Sprint Course offers a 500 meter swim, a 9.5 mile bike and a 3.1 mile run. There is also a 5K and a 10K run offered. The swim takes place in the beautiful Sea of Cortez. The bike portion will be on a flat looped course on the roads within Las Palomas Resort, which will be closed to traffic. The Sprint race will consist of 1 loop, while the Olympic race will be 3 loops of the 9.5 mile course. The run portion is along the paths of the resort golf course. The 5K & 10K races will use the same course as the triathlons. The finish line is just 200 yards from the beach and will be complete with cold beer, food and music provided by a DJ at the post-run pool party. Sunday includes a Mexican buffet with mimosas at Las Palomas’ Citron Restaurant.

For those who prefer to relax on the weekend, there will be plenty of viewing of the triathlon from Sandy Beach, where you can cheer on the competitors. There are also plenty of exciting things to do in Rocky Point such as shopping, bar-hopping, water activities and massages on the beach or in a spa. April’s temperatures are in the low 80’s with water temperatures being in the low 70’s. The Rocky Point triathlon has been going strong for nearly ten years, making this event a triathlon tradition. So come on down to Rocky Point and book your rooms early- it will be a fun filled exciting weekend!
