Parasailing

Parasailing

Challenge yourself to take to the skies with a parachute! If you’re someone who enjoys adrenaline and heights, as well as the wind wooshing by, then parasailing is just for you and available in Puerto Peñasco!

This entertaining sport will let you gaze over the city, from the Pinacate peak to Isla San Jorge, Sandy Beach, and even the outline of Baja California from the clear skies of Puerto Peñasco for an approximately 15 minute ride.

The parasail is anchored to a special speed boat, making it safe and secure, allowing you to take photographs of your surroundings from above. Parasailing adventures depart from near the malecón or Sandy Beach, and can carry from 1-3 people depending on weight. As well as being fun, safety measures involve appropriate equipment including cinches and a harness, which are necessary and comply with regulations.

There’s even an option to dunk down to your waist as part of the adventure. Costs range from $55 US individually to $100 US per couple and $15 US for anyone else in the boat just along for the ride.

The area itself is home to several oyster farms renowned for their excellent quality, which is why for years oysters have been exported from here to different parts of Mexico and to neighboring countries. The most visited oyster farm is run by a women’s cooperative, which also offers a small restaurant “El Barco”, serving seafood recently pulled out of the sea. El Pinacate

El Pinacate

and Grand Desert of Altar Biosphere Reserve

The stunning landscape of volcanic craters bathed in black lava of el Pinacate, as well as the dunes of the Gran Altar desert, in Sonora, were declared world heritage site by UNESCO. Its ten huge, very deep, circular caters constitute only part of the beauty of this unique place in the Sonoran desert, which is home to the greatest biodiversity of the four North American deserts.

El Pinacate is an exceptional area for ecotourism and for watching hundreds of birds glide through the air with a fascinating desert scenery as its background. Within the volcanic area there is a museum showing the prehistory and evolution of this area, which, due to geographical defects or external effects, has been transformed over time.

This natural protected area is home to over 1,000 species of flora and fauna, and is considered as the desert with the greatest biodiversity in the world. Here live 40 species of mammals, 200 of birds, 40 of reptiles, as well as amphibians and two species of native fresh water fish. There are also some endangered species such as the Sonoran pronghorn, the bighorn sheep, the Gila monster and the desert turtle.

El Pinacate and the Gran Altar Desert also have a great wealth of archaeological remains, dating back to over 20,000 years. The papagos or tohono o’odham (desert people) a group of people still living in this territory, consider it as being a very important cultural site, as they maintain the belief that the origin of their creation took place on the Pico Pinacate, where they still perform sacred ceremonies.

The designation of El Pinacate and the Gran Altar desert makes Mexico proud, it was for this reason that UNESCO received its candidacy in which it is accredited that this Natural Protected Area has an outstanding universal value, with natural and important ecosystems for the preservation of the biodiversity, in addition to a unique scenic and aesthetic beauty unparalleled in the world.

The distinction grants Mexico the fifth natural site designated world heritage of humanity, earlier, this distinction was granted to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, the El Vizcaino Whale Sanctuary, the islands and Protected Areas in the Gulf of California, and the Biosphere Reserve of the Monarch Butterfly.

Adventure at Bird Island!

Adventure at Bird Island!

Isla san jorge

Isla San Jorge aka Bird Island

One of the main natural attractions awaiting discovery when in search of adventure upon visiting Puerto Peñasco is a trip to Isla San Jorge, also known as “Bird Island”. Be sure to spend an incredible day getting to know this beautiful corner in the Sea of Cortez! Decreed a federal reserve in 1978, this small group of rock formations is home to birds characteristic to the Upper Gulf of California, as well as migratory species, and also exhibits one of the most important populations of seals and sea lions in the country!

The trip begins early in the morning by boarding a boat at the marina in Puerto Peñasco for the approximate 1½ hour trip to the island. This time allows you to take in the beautiful early morning and enjoy the coast extending southeast of town. If you’re lucky, along the way you may come across groups of dolphins accompanying the boat, entertaining everyone with their acrobatic maneuvers. If your trip is in the winter, we recommend you bring along binoculars and stay alert for possible whale sightings.

In nearing the island, you can readily appreciate various birds that fly alongside the boat on its journey. You’ll also be sure to note the characteristic smell given that the island is inhabited by thousands of birds, evidence of which is plain to see.

After arriving at the island generally from the North, which is protected from currents and winds from the south, the most exciting part of the trip begins. Take in this paradise in the company of hundreds of seals and sea lions who, curious to your presence, jump into the water to investigate and play around visitors. This is also when you can enjoy a variety of activities from merely observing and photographing the area to hopping aboard a paddleboard or kayak, or swimming in the sea.  Though landing on the island is not allowed, kayaks can get pretty close for observing the majestic sea lions. Or you may choose to swim, surrounded by curious and playful seals. In normal conditions, water visibility also makes this an ideal spot for snorkeling or diving.

After enjoying the Sea of Cortez, Bird Island, and its hosts, take pleasure in the return to Puerto Peñasco, resting and refreshing in the sea breeze while preparing to relish in a beautiful sunset as you top off a grand day of adventure!
