The new film Sonora, directed by Alejandro Springall, brings to the screen the script based on the novel La Ruta de los Caídos of Puerto Peñasco author Guillermo Munro. With a release date of September 6th, more than 300 copies of the film will be shown in theaters across Mexico.
The film, which was shot over a period of two months at locations across Sonora including the Pinacate, the historical center of Hermosillo, Ures, Guaymas, and San Miguel de Horcasitas, tells the story of a group of people with diverse backgrounds who, due to varied circumstances, find themselves crossing the inhospitable Sonoran desert in a single vehicle as they attempt to reach their destination
The feature film, starring Joaquín Cosío as Emeterio of the Tohono O’odham ethnic group, along with Dolores Heredía, Giovanna Zacarias, Juan Manuel Bernal, Harold Torres, Jason Tobin and Sonoran actors Patricia Ortiz and Carolina Molva, combines spectacular panoramas of the Pinacate Reserve as no other film production has ever done.
The movie, which is also intended to make it to China and the U.S., shares the story of Chinese families upon their arrival in Sonora and the xenophobia they faced. The story also hits on the deportation of Mexicans from the U.S., survival of the Tohono O’odham community, and the Great Depression gripping the area at the beginning of the 1930s.
Prior to the film’s national premier, two special functions were held in Hermosillo and Puerto Peñasco respectively, which included the presence of various cast members as well as producer Edher Campos of Machetes Producciones, who assured the film’s beauty, story, and purpose could make it a true classic.
