Puerto Peñasco continues to be a safe tourist destination. Given the utmost importance of ensuring a calm atmosphere, both within the city as well as on the highway to town, the Lukeville-Sonoyta-Puerto Peñasco Safety Corridor remains in effect. This includes ongoing federal and state monitoring, clear signage, roadside assistance, surveillance cameras, and the support of agencies from the three levels of government.
The overall intent of the Safety Corridor, explains Puerto Peñasco Convention and Visitors Bureau president Héctor Vázquez el Mercado, is to make sure visitors coming from Mexico and abroad feel safe when using the highway to get to Puerto Peñasco, while preventing accidents or criminal acts such as what recently took place along a stretch of the Caborca-Puerto Lobos highway.
Although the unfortunate highway incident along part of the coastal highway in the municipality of Caborca is beyond Puerto Peñasco, both federal and state monitoring efforts have been strengthened along highways surrounding this tourism port.
